I have found all of her books extremely helpful. My two favorites are TheDance of Anger and The Dance of Intimacy. She focuses on how to become your own
person without losing other relationships. Her Dance of Connection is also highly regarded.
2. Mary Pipher, PhD
All of her books are highly recommended. Her most popular book, Reviving Ophelia is about the negative effects of culture on adolescent girls.
3. Anne Lamott
I have enjoyed her essays on her "messy life" (her humor is self-deprecating). Her essays have been described as faith based but with a left wing take. I like Traveling Mercies, Plan B and Grace Eventually. She has also written one of the most recommended books on creative writing, Bird by Bird: Some Insturctions on Writing and Life.
4. Jane Goodall, PhD.
An internationally renowed primatologist and conservationist who has authored many books. My current favorite is Harvest of Hop: A Guide to Mindful Eating.
5. Malcolm Gladwell.
Outliners: The Story of Success and The Tipping Point: How Little Things Can Make a Big Difference.
Animal, Vegetable, Miracle: A Year of Food Life. Barbara Kingsolver.
Feeling Good the New Mood Therapy by David Burns. A very popular book on cognitive therapy for treating depression and developing self-esteem. The book is not as new as the title suggest, but it is still very helpful.
The Anxiety and Phobia Workbook by Edmund Bourne. This is a award winning and comprehensive guide for overcoming anxiety. Probably the single best source of self-help information on anxiety.
Why Zebras Don't Get Ulcers by Robert Sapolsky. A well written and regarded book about how stress causes phsyical and emotional problems.
